Magnetic Paint

Let's talk about magnetic paint today. The picture above is of my studio in which I used a magnetic primer on the Palm green wall on the left. You can see all of the stuff I have hanging on that wall and most of it IS magnets. So yes, it does really work. In order for me to get it to work though I had to do 5 coats. And, the other piece of information you should know is that I used a magnetic primer which is very dark gray. The reason it is gray is because it is a primer mixed with a bunch of little metal shavings in it. So in reality the paint is not magnetic it is metal. That is why magnets stick to it. A couple of things you should take in consideration before running out to Home Depot for some magnetic paint...

1. The metal shavings in the paint will change the texture of the surface in which you are painting. So, if you have a smooth surface and want it to stay that way it won't. Sanding it will take away a lot of the metal shavings and the magnets won't work as well so you'll have to live with the variation of texture the metal shavings will create.
2. Magnetic paint is fairly expensive! You will have to cover the surface you want to be magnetic at least 3 times! I painted only one wall that is close to 9' x 12' 5 times and it cost me about $125.
3. The metal shavings colors the paint or primer a metalish gray. So, whatever you paint over it will be affected by the gray color. If you plan on painting a light color on that surface you should paint a few coats of the magnetic paint first, paint at least one coat of the good quality primer next, and then paint your color you really would like to see. The wall will still be magnetic but you'll get the color you like.
4. Even with 5 coats of the magnetic paint, some of my magnets don't stick. If they are heavy or weak then they slide down to the base boards. Mighty magnets work super as well do the lighter in weight magnets.

Bottom line...I would encourage you to paint with the magnetic paint, it's just going to be less frustrating for you since I discovered a lot of the mistakes! I love my magnetic wall and I'm sure you will too!!!!

Red Painted Walls

Let's talk about red walls. It is really popular to have an accent wall painted a different color than the rest of the walls in a room now a days. One of the most popular colors is RED! Our family likes a tomatoe red, but we were horrified when the painters said they were done with the wall. The color was BRIGHT FIRE ENGINE RED. This is the wall that has the TV on it so it's not like we aren't going to notice it. Well, with some research we found a few helpful tips to have a red that you will be able to live with and most importantly, look at! First, prime the wall with a toned primer. Many paint stores will give you an orange primer that is great under red paint. Some painters will suggest putting even a gray or brown primer down first. The deal is this...red (and yellow and orange) tend to have a translucence to them. Therefor they will let the under color effect it's color. If you have an orange primer the red will take on an orange tint to it. If you don't use a toned primer you can always do what we did...paint the wall with 5 coats! You decide which way to go! No matter what, you will most likely have to put a couple of coats of paint on in order to get what you anticipated.

The other thing about red (orange, or other dark color) paint. It can show imperfections in the wall and/or paint job if it's in a well lit area. We chose the East wall because there will be no sun light directly on it. We've seen many painted walls in which the paint strokes or drywall seams clearly show their ugly faces when the sun comes through the window! It's mighty hard to get an even paint job, so don't harass the painter if you choose a wall that is well lit and you see paint strokes! Give yourself and the painter a break by choosing a wall that is not well lit!

I bought this vase and the squiggly things in it at All Things Imported also. The vase was about $20 and the squiggly things (I got way more than can fit in this vase) were only $6. I love pottery and I buy quite a bit of it. This fits into my collection of pieces that costs hundreds of dollars easily! Who can pass up a deal like that? Love it! Thanks for checking in. Good priced rub-on mantras

My brother told me about a place on Overland that sells really good priced imports. I checked it out and he's right! I think it's called "All About Imports" and it's across the street from KFC. I'm sorry I don't have the proper directions but it's new enough that I can't find it on the web yet. I'd reccomend you go for all of your decorating needs. There is a little of every style in there and they have great prices (did I say that already?). In case you don't know how to do the rub on letters or words I'll give you a little info. It is super easy. I stuck the "ALWAYS" on the wall first with painters tape. Made sure it was level and then pulled the adhesive off and rubbed over the backing. When I peeled the backing up, the letters were stuck to the wall. I repeated the steps with the "Always kiss me goodnight". They've got all kinds of sayings and you can get something custom also. The nice thing is that when you want a change, you can just peel the words off. I've priced these things before and this place on Overland is by far the best price I've ever seen! I believe it cost around $20.

Townhouse for Rent

Coolest nightlight!

You will be so very happy to put these nightlight outlets in your new home. These are so handy in hallways where you really only need one plug in normally and it always seems too dark until you find a light switch. They can be found at most home improvement stores for about $25. Since we put them in our own home, we like to put them in all of our homes we build.
